Sounds of the Underground*

*Scurrilous gossip alert - this might all be B.S. but makes a good story. Check Herald Thursday for details?

Hmm...what is happening in Folkestone Town Council?
Fresh from bumping into a fuming town councillor who remained admirably tight lipped after last week’s meeting, word is reaching FUTS that the Lib Dems have gone cloak and dagger.

Some spurious and as yet unproven allegations of a high profile defection TO the Lib Dems, as well as shenanigans over the choice of the next mayor - rumour has it a gentleman’s agreement has been reneged upon.

Tim Prater is not the most popular person in the chamber, at least with some people – but no change there then!

Still waiting for pistols at dawn on Sunny Sands.

    Me!?!

Hang on - lets get this right. The Tories and People First had cut a deal last year that they would jointly support Janet Andrews for Mayor last year, and then jointly support Rodica Wheeler this year.

They did so to ensure there was no Lib Dem Mayor, and the Lib Dems were, clearly, not part of that deal (and only actually had it confirmed at the Council meeting last week - by Brian Copping of People First in his incredible rant at Janet after the vote).

Last year, Janet stood, Lynne Beaumont stood, and Janet was elected by the combined People First and Tory vote.

This year, Rodica stood, Tom McNeice stood, and Tom was elected. What changed? 2 Tories failed to vote for Rodica - one abstained, one didn't turn up. Janet voted for Tom.

Did I, or any other Lib Dem, speak to Janet before that meeting? No. Did I, or any other Lib Dem, tell other groups Tom was standing before the meeting? No.

Is the bigger question why 2 Tories and the Mayor elected with Tory votes could not bring themselves to vote for Rodica Wheeler? Probably. So whose fault is that?

    Tim Prater
